I’m focusing on that age of 12 because my son turns 12 this year. Many of the boys and girls in his class are 12 already. And 12 happens to be the age of the youngest British soldier known to have served in World War I.

When I found out we’d likely had swine flu, I thought it must be like new pork, a leaner, meaner variation of the “mild” 2009 flu. But it’s the same swine, and it’s no pussycat, set to dog Australia’s 2014 season.

But at the cinema a few weeks back, I was taken away by a story, struck by a young girl’s trust that things would be all right and then shocked by my own mistrust. We’re not in Kansas anymore, and we’re certainly not in Oz, and it made me sad.
